IED Found at Alabama DAM in 'Unprecedented Threat' to Water

A routine maintenance check at an Alabama dam uncovered what authorities are calling an “unprecedented threat” to the nation’s water supply. Workers found a live explosive device submerged at the Converse Reservoir Dam in Mobile, prompting a massive multi-agency response to safely remove and detonate the grenade-type improvised explosive device.

Discovery During Routine Inspection

On May 12, divers conducting standard repair surveys at the Converse Reservoir Dam discovered the IED underwater near the dam structure. The Mobile Area Water and Sewer System immediately contacted local law enforcement, triggering a coordinated response from five separate agencies. The Gulf Coast Regional Maritime Response and Render-Safe Team successfully retrieved and detonated the device in a controlled operation. No injuries were reported during the recovery mission.

Massive Multi-Agency Response

The operation required expertise from the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office, FBI Bomb Squad, Mobile Police Department Explosive Ordinance Detail, Alabama Law Enforcement Agency Bomb Squad, and the Daphne Search and Rescue Team. MAWSS Director Bud McCrory emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating that the device could have caused serious damage to the city’s drinking water supply. He praised the professionalism of law enforcement partners and the vigilance of contractors who identified the threat before harm occurred.

National Security Implications

The discovery raises urgent questions about the security of America’s critical infrastructure. The Department of Homeland Security has been notified of the incident, though neither DHS nor the FBI have issued public statements. No suspects have been identified, and investigators have not disclosed a potential motive. Security experts are calling for immediate inspections of dams, bridges, and water facilities nationwide to prevent similar threats.

What This Means

This incident marks the first known case of an explosive device being planted at a major American water infrastructure facility. The Converse Reservoir supplies drinking water to Mobile’s population, making it a potential high-value target. The fact that the IED went undetected until a routine maintenance check highlights vulnerabilities in current security protocols. Federal and state authorities must now reassess protection measures for the nation’s water systems and other essential infrastructure to prevent future attacks on public utilities.

  1. Our enemies are inside the US as much as outside. If democrats would admit this, they might see the urgency to remove illegal immigrants as one step for our protection. Otherwise, dems should be at the bottom of the list for water rations.
